On Expired, Sour and Spoiled Milk
When is it safe to use milk past the expiry date?
- Soured Milk is SAFE
- Spoiled Milk is NOT SAFE
Whats the difference between Expired, Sour and Spoiled Milk?
Soured milk is milk that has curdled over time, or artificially-induced using vinegar or lemon juice. If it is soured in the fridge, it's safe to use it for other purposes (see below). If its soured in the heat, or left open about 3 days after expiry (or 2 weeks past expiry and left sealed in the fridge) it most probably contains plenty of (possibly harmful) bacteria and is now considered spoiled milk.
Expired Milk = Milk past the expiry Date
Soured Milk = Milk + Some Curdling + Smell + Fridge
Spoiled Milk = Soured Milk + Sun + Air + harmful Bacteria
More about Soured Milk and Spoiled Milk
"Typically, milk goes sour about three days after the expiration date. If unopened, it can last up to two weeks past the expiration date. Sour milk has many uses that you may find helpful, and you'll no longer feel the need to rush to consume it all before it expires." From sheknows.comUnopened Milk + Fridge + <2 Weeks = Soured Milk
Expired Milk + 3 Days = Spoiled Milk

Backstory: (more later!)
What happened?
I had some Hokkaido milk that was left unopened in the fridge. It's ten days past the expiry date. I opened it and it still smelt and tasted fresh.
What did I do?
Instead of throwing it out and wasting it, I decided to search on the internet to find out what can be done with it.
Resolution
The outcomes of my research is below.
I Cooked some pancakes using the milk. They were delicious!
